Returning From 6 week Tour of NC, SC and Virginia
Hi. My name is Pam McLean and I am the owner artist of Konanah Arts and Glass Studio. The name Konanah came about when I was working with my son Scott in the computer industry. His internet name was Conan and I became known as Konanah on the internet because I am Nana to my sons Steven and Scott's children Steven, James, Brianna and Brooke. Konanah is also an ancient Hawaiian board game , like chess, played with coral and lava.
I have always loved to paint and create new projects using all types of mediums. But my first love has always been cooking and my family of course. When I was taking a course in Stained Glass and Figure Painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston I noticed on the other side of the stained glass studio were pieces of glass being placed on top of glass but missing the leaded cartoon lines. I asked my Professor what this process was and he said "Glass Fusion" you melt and shape the glass in a kiln at very high temperatures. I said "You Cook it"? "I want to try that". He told me he was not real familiar with the process but that I had to use special glass. He pointed me in the direction of this special "Bull's-eye" glass. I put a couple of pieces together and put them on a treated shelf for the Glass Fusion Students to fire…I could not wait for my next class. And when I saw the results I was hooked.
I began researching on the internet joining Brad Walkers online bulletin board warmglass.com, , reading books and taking workshops at Snow Farm in the Berkshires (basic) with Lisa Richardson Bach as well as (advanced) with Newy Fagen a pioneer in the new "Kiln Formed Glass Movement" at the Art Glass House in Cocoa.
My work is a mixture of form and color and process using heat as the main ingredient. I am inspired by all things Asian & by the great abstract Masters of all time such as Kandinsky, Malevich, Mondrian and Matisse. You can see an abstract Asian style in my Peace, Love and Understanding Series as well as my "Tea Ceremony Series".
I still love to cook only now "I am cooking with Glass".
My favorite words of my Mother…Hi Darlin Darlin and Peace Love and Understanding. I still miss her so…
